The Ganges River is a goddess, Ganga, is the Indian tradition, and her story is part of both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Vishvamitra tells Rama the story of Ganga's coming to earth in the Ramayana, and Ganga appears as a character in the Mahabharata: she is the wife of King Shantanu, father of the hero Bhishma.
