Indra is one of the ancient gods of India and, while he is no longer worshiped in India today, he is a character you will meet with repeatedly in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Research Tip: Start with the Wikipedia article about Indra, along with the articles about his elephant Airavata and his horse Uchchaihshravas and his thunderbolt weapon, Vajra; his consort is Shachi. You might also be interested in the role that Indra plays in Buddhism under the name Shakra/Shakka (he appears repeatedly in the Jataka tales as Shakka, for example).
You will find comic books on Reserve in Bizzell: Indra and Vritra, Indra and Shachi, and Indra and Shibi.
