Reading Guide: Devee. Sita, Promila, and Shakuntala

Title: Nine Ideal Indian Women: Sita, Promila, and Shakuntala
Author: Sunity Devee
Year: 1919

Comments: The stories of Sita and Promila (wife of Ravana's son Indrajit) come from the Ramayana, and the story of Shakuntala is found in the Mahabharata, and it is also the subject of a play by the classical Sanskrit poet and playwright Kalidasa. This book's author, Sunity Devee (1864–1932), was a fascinating woman in her own right, an educator and women's rights activist. You can read about her life at Wikipedia, and you can also read more here: Sunity Devee.

Free Online: See all the links at Freebookapalooza. The links below are to the Internet Archive presentation of the book.

Length: one week. I've divided the reading into two parts: Part A - Part B. This can also work for just a half-week of reading! You can choose the part that interests you the most.

Reading Part A
Sita's Story. A story from the Ramayana.

Reading Part B
Promila's StoryAnother story from the Ramayana.
Shakuntala's Story. A famous story in the Indian tradition.
