In addition to the famous avatars of Vishnu (which can be a topic all by itself!), there are other famous stories of the gods and goddesses who come down to earth as avatars.
Research Tip: Start with the Wikipedia article about Avatars, and you might also want to take a look at the Dashavatara, the Ten Avatars of Vishnu. In addition to the avatars of Vishnu, some other famous examples include the goddess Ganga becoming the woman who marries King Shantanu, or the god Shiva's avatar Sharabha; many people consider Rama's loyal follower Hanuman to be an incarnation of Shiva also. The goddess Lakshmi takes human form as Sita to accompany Vishnu-as-Rama and as Radha to accompany Vishnu-as-Krishna, while Shesha takes form as Rama's brother Lakshmana and as Krishna's brother Balarama. There are also some famous avatars of Vishnu who are not part of the famous "ten" Dashavatara, like the woman Mohini and the horse Hayagriva.
