Project Idea: Ganesha

Ganesha is famous for being the scribe who wrote down the Mahabharata as dictated by Vyasa, and of course as an elephant-headed god he is easy to recognize. You can use your class project to find out more about Ganesha, who remains a figure of celebration and devotion throughout India today. You could tell stories about Ganesha in your project and/or Ganesha could be the storyteller, giving his own perspective on the epic tales.

Research Tip: Start with the Wikipedia article about Ganesha, and you will also want to learn something about his parents Parvati and Shiva, as well as his brother Kartikeya. There is an article about the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi, plus a list of Ganesha temples. You will find a comic book on Reserve in Bizzell: Ganesha: The Remover of All Obstacles, plus this books for checkout in Bizzell: Ganesha Goes to Lunch by Kamla Kapur. And be sure to take a look at the devotional Ganesha music videos at YouTube. There is also an excellent video by Devdutt Pattanaik: Ganesha's Secret.
