RAMAYANA


I have created an anthology of public domain versions of the Ramayana: Ramayana Online: Public Domain Edition.

Arni, Samhita. Sita's Ramayana. This is a beautiful graphic novel with illustrations by Moyna Chitrakar. You will find the book at the Bizzell Reserve desk.

Banker, Ashok. Ramayana. This Kindle ebook, available in Bizzell, is a massive compilation of Banker's six Ramayana novels: Prince of Ayodhya, Siege of Mithila, Demons of Chitrakut, Armies of Hanuman: Bridge of Rama, King of Ayodhya, Vengeance of Ravana, and Sons of Sita.

Buck, William. Ramayana: King Rama's Way. Buck's book is available for purchase at the OU Bookstore, and there are cheap used copies online. There is a copy at the Bizzell Reserve desk as well, along with an abridged audiobook. There is also a detailed Reading Guide available here at the blog.

Chopra and Dasgupta. Ramayan 3392 AD Vol. 1: Mahavinaash Age and Vol. 2: Tome of the Wastelands. These graphic novels retell the Ramayana in a post-apocalyptic future. You can find them at the Bizzell Reserve desk.

Devee, Sunity. Ideal Indian Women: Sita and Promila. Sita is Rama's wife, of course, and Promila is the wife of Ravana's son, Indrajit. This is a free public domain book online.

Dharma, Krishna. Ramayana: India's Immortal Tale of Adventure, Love and Wisdom. This recent translation (2008) is available online for free at the BhaktiVedanta Vedabase.

Dutt, Romesh. Ramayana: The Epic of Rama, Prince of India. This is a retelling in English verse of the most important episodes from the epic. It is a free public domain book online.

Gould, F. J. The Divine Archer. This retelling is based both on Valmiki and on Tulsi Das. It is available as a free public domain book online, and there is a detailed Reading Guide available here at the blog.

Hodgson, Geraldine. Rama and the Monkeys. This is a retelling of the Ramayana for a young audience, and it is available as a free public domain book online.

Macdonald, Frederika Richardson. The Iliad of the East: Ramayana. Macdonald provides vivid, detailed retellings of the most important episodes from the epic. It is a free public domain book online.

Mackenzie, Donald. Story of Rama. This is Mackenzie's retelling of the Ramayana in his free public domain book, Indian Myth and Legend, which is freely available online.

Menon, A. and V. Singh. Breaking the Bow. This marvelous collection of "speculative fiction" stories inspired by the Ramayana is available as a Kindle ebook at the Bizzell Reserve desk, and there is a printed copy of the book too.

Dutton, Maude. The Tortoise and the Geese, and Other Fables of Bidpai. This translation of Bidpai's fables is in the public domain and is freely available online.

Francis and Thomas. Jataka Tales. This is an extensive collection of jataka tales which is available online as a book in the public domain.

Hale-Wortham, B. Hitopadesha, or The Book of Good Counsel. This is a lovely translation of the Hitopadesha which is in the public domain and freely available online.

Inayat, Noor. Twenty Jataka Tales. This collection of jataka tales is by Noor Inayat, daughter of Hazrat Inayat Khan. It is free to read online.
