Character of the Day: BHISHMA
BHISHMA is the sone of King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga in human form; he was first called Devavrata, but he took the name Bhishma ("Terrible") for the terrible oath ("bhishma pratigya") that he swore to renounce having a family of his own so that the son of Shantanu and Satyavati could succeed him. Bhishma fought on the Kaurava side and died during the war.

Mahabharata: Bhishma is one of the most important characters in the epic. He belongs to the generation once removed from Pandu and Dhritarashtra, so that makes him great-uncle (or grandfather) to the Pandavas and to Duryodhana and his brothers.
