When I was researching an image, I came across this wonderful web presentation from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco: Deities in Stone.

The main page has an overview about Indian sculpture, and there is a slideshow of the featured sculptures with detailed information about that image, which cover a thousand years of art from around the year 600 C.E. to the year 1700 C.E.
