Project Idea: Animals, Natural and Supernatural

From animals of this world to heavenly beasts, there are all kinds of creatures you will find in stories from India. For a project, you could zoom in on one animal in particular, or you could find a theme that brings together different animal characters.

Research Tip: At Wikipedia, you can find all kinds of useful materials about divine animal characters like the animal incarnations of Vishnu as fish, turtle, and boar; the celestial animals who emerged at the Churning of the Ocean like the wish-granting cow Kamadhenu, Indra's elephant Airavata, and the heavenly horse Uchhaishravas; etc. You could also explore the cosmic serpents known as Nagas. Just follow the links from one article to another and you will find many animal characters of interest!

In addition to online resources,  you will find comic books on Reserve in Bizzell, like Garuda: Vishnu's Divine Mount, Monkey Stories, Jackal Stories, Elephant Stories, Deer Stories, Bird Stories, and Animals Tales from the Mahabharata. Plus, there are Bizzell resources for checkout like Pashu: Animal Tales from Hindu Mythology and Divine Beings: Airavata, Jatayu, Nandi and Others.

For more tips, see the listing for this topic: Animal Characters of the Ramayana and also Vahanas of the Gods (most of the vahanas are animals).
