Reading Guide: Devee. Savitri, Damayanti, Sati, and Uttara

(illustration from the book: Damayanti)

Title: Nine Ideal Indian Women: Savitri, Damayanti, Sati, and Uttara
Author: Sunity Devee
Year: 1919

Comments: Three of the women in this unit are characters whose stories are told in the Mahabharata: Savitri, Damayanti, and Uttara; the fourth story is about Sati, the first wife of the god Shiva. The book's author, Sunity Devee (1864–1932), was a fascinating woman in her own right, an educator and women's rights activist. You can read about her life at Wikipedia, and you can also read more here: Sunity Devee.

Free Online: See all the links at Freebookapalooza. The links below are to the Internet Archive presentation of the book.

Length: one week. I've divided the reading into two parts: Part A - Part B. This can also work for just a half-week of reading; choose the part that is most interesting to you.

Reading Part A
Damayanti

Reading Part B
Uttara.
Sati.
